What We Do
(i) Environmental ManagementThis was the first project started in 1997 and is an income generating activity that benefits the youth in the organization who are actively involved in garbage collection and recycling activities and are income generating activities that benefit the youth in the organization who are involved in garbage collection in Huruma and Kasarani areas.
This was formed in conjunction with some community members of Ngei 1 village, because previously youth were engaged in all forms of negative social vices such as drug abuse, prostitution, rape, mugging e.t.c. which was due to poverty, illiteracy. The area was impoverished and characterized by high level diseases. Youths are often exploited by politicians as channels to cause disruptions and later receiving handouts for causing those disruptions. A need arose to initiate positive ways in which youth would be involved for a better society.
(ii) Water and Sanitation
Due to scarcity of proper sanitation facilities in residential plots, the organization, through the support of Institute of Cultural Affairs, constructed a water point, toilets and bathrooms in 2001 as a response to this situation. As a result this provided an opportunity for one of the group members to earn income from manning these services i.e. receiving monies from water, toilet and bathroom services administered to the community members who are charged an affordable fee for these services.
This initiation was is in response to the challenges faced by the community at large in Ngei 1 and its environs in accessing water, toilets and bathrooms.
(iii) Transport Services
Through the Institute of Cultural Affairs, the organization acquired a small pickup van in 2003 that assists in ferrying of garbage collected, and is hired out to the community for various activities. This ensures that various young people with qualified driving skills provide services to the community who pay for these services, and from the money earned these young people get an allowance from it. There are also handcarts, which complement the transport services.
(iv) Arts and Crafts
The Arts & Crafts project started in 2007 and focuses into tapping the creative potential of young people in areas of Beadwork, Papier Mache products and other handicrafts etc. From the products sold both locally and internationally, young people involved in this activity earn some allowance which also motivates them to be self reliant and allows them explore other creative ways of making the art products. Some of these products include Necklaces, Bracelets, Earrings, Coasters, Table Mats e.t.c.
(v) Loan Revolving Scheme
This scheme was started with in 2000 and later received support from Youth Initiatives Kenya (YIKE). The scheme involves revolving funds among young members in form of loans, which are re-payable on a monthly basis. This has enabled young people to acquire loans which are payable at an interest rate of between 5%-7%. This scheme has been of benefit through various ways such as business startups, schools fees, payment of medical bills e.t.c. However, plans are underway to expand this scheme to the larger community of Ngei 1 and Huruma at large.
(vi) Community Resource Center
This serves as a place where youth groups and community at large regardless of age can access information, exchange information and ideas and learn computer skills. It was started in 2003, in addition Africa Book Foundation donated books in 2008 that provides variety in accessing information on various issues.
(vii) Capacity Building
The organization greatly values the importance of development of skills, knowledge and capacity of its members. Whilst external training opportunities are constantly sought, the organization has also developed its own In-House Training programme since the start of 2007, where members and staff conduct various training sessions on a monthly basis. There are however sessions that are facilitated by external organizations with expertise in various areas such as; Personal development Skills, Team building
This programme also benefits other youth groups and individuals from the community, who are invited to training sessions.
(viii) Child Support Scheme
Various challenges are faced by parents in providing necessary educational facilities for their children in Huruma community. In response to this a child support scheme was initiated, aimed at supporting children in Huruma unable to access educational facilities with materials such as school uniform, and stationery. Currently 12 children have been enrolled in the program which will expand in future. Inline with this support other extra curricular activities for their benefit are planned to ensure all round support for the children in addition to education they are receiving such as educational trips e.t.c .
(ix) Community Outreach
This is done through various activities the organization carries out such as environmental cleanups, community policing activities, community meetings. These are done in collaboration with the community at large, and the local authorities. The main objective of this activity is to consistently sensitize the community on the importance of a clean environment and prevention of diseases that occur with an unclean environment.
(x) Guidance & Counseling
This is done using peer to peer methods where members of the organization that have been rehabilitated from negative social vices are able to provide counsel and positive influence to fellow peers to engage in positive social behavior.
